"Do not be ashamed of the Testimony"

Tuesday 31 March 2020

“So, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.”

2 Timothy 1v8

We have one of the best legal systems in the world, as our standard approach is “you are innocent until proven guilty.” In other words, there has to be substantial evidence and proof that you have done what you are being tried for. Imagine “If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?” This is certainly a thought-provoking and soul-searching question! What would it be about our church life together that demonstrates our faith and life in Jesus Christ, what do we do or stand for, that would be proof of our love of God, others and our world?
We are continuing to work our way through Acts this morning and we arrive at a point where the church in Jerusalem has been scattered because of persecution. But everywhere the people went they spoke about the Lord Jesus, and people responded and turned to the Lord. The news of this reached the apostles in Jerusalem that Greeks were turning to Jesus in great numbers so they sent Barnabus to investigate and check out the evidence. It says in Acts 11 v 23 “When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. The evidence was clear for everyone to see that the Holy Spirit was at work.
It’s ironic this was the first place the disciples were called Christians by the population around them, it meant “Little Christ” and was supposed to be a bit of an insult but what a compliment the evidence of what God was doing showed they were indeed becoming more like Jesus.
Let us continue to filled with the Holy Spirit and Faith and if Christianity did become a crime, may the evidence be so strong we would be found guilty on all counts in our individual and church lives.

The Holy Spirit is given to us so we can see what others cannot see and hear what others cannot hear so that we can be a BETTER WITNESS!
