“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Friday 15 January 2021

“My God! My God why have you forsaken me!” He says to us: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Psalm 22

Jane and Paul were young members of the church when Brenda and I returned home from overseas. They met and married there. Paul suffered from haemophilia which prevented his blood from clotting. He contracted AIDS through infected injections of the Factor 8 blood clotting agent. It hit them and their families and the church hard. They were committed Christians. Jane was pregnant and was admitted to the hospital for the birth, put in a separate room to avoid contact with other patients – she felt it was a stigma. The church rallied round and a group met for prayer for his healing, and a day of prayer and fasting was held on New Year’s Day 1988.

Paul died in December of that year. I was privileged to be asked to share in the funeral service and to read the lesson chosen by Jane. It was Psalm 13. “How long, O Lord, will you forget us for ever?”

Today we are living in an exceptionally difficult time as did the Psalmist. “How long can we support this?” we cry. This is when the small word BUT appears. “But I trust in your unfailing love.”

Jesus knows what we are going through. He quoted Psalm 22 when on the cross: “My God! My God why have you forsaken me!” He says to us: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
