For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.
Jonah chapter two- God of the impossible
The story of Jonah in the great fish is one of the Bible's miracles. Can a person really survive inside a great fish? Inside a whale? History tells us it IS possible. But do we REALLY need to know if it's possible? If we don't believe the miraculous story of Jonah, we run the risk of picking and choosing which miracles in the Bible we believe and which we don’t. Surely that undermines Gods word and our faith is no longer intact. That's not a good place to be in. We don't need to know HOW God does what He does, that is what makes Him GOD. Jonah’s story has far more to teach us about Gods patience and never-ending love than about the anatomy of fish! Re read Jonah chapter two and marvel at Gods patience and protection. See the fish in a new light as God preserves Jonah's life and meets with him in this most unusual place!
Jonah chapter Three- What a surprise!
Jonah was very surprised when he obeyed the Lord and stepped up to do what the Lord had asked him. The people of Nineveh, instead of beating, mocking and rejecting Jonah took on board what Jonah said and were deeply sorry and turned away from their evil ways, from the greatest of them to the least. God forgave them and did not release the judgement upon them that he said he would and that they clearly deserved.
What a beautiful picture of the power of the Gospel, and the Amazing Grace of God in the hands of an obedient messenger. We also need to learn that same obedience to take the Gospel out to lost people around us and have confidence that it will not always fall on deaf ears. Isaiah speaking about God’s word put it this way.
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it. Isaiah 55 v 10 & 11.
We just need to be faithful, obedient, willing, and let God do the rest.
