Are we clothed with power?

Tuesday 31 March 2020

I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

Luke 24 v 9

Jesus gave the disciples and us an incredible task of going into the whole to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, teaching them to obey all that Jesus commanded. But He also promised he would be with them and us until the end of the age. How would be fulfil that? Simply by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, and "clothing us with power from on high."

The Holy Spirit is a beautiful and powerful part of who God is. When we are clothed by Him in His power, we are given the power to be witness, and through His power we have aid in all situations. Without Him, we are powerless. In our analogy of boxing, Jesus told the disciples to not get into the ring without first having the power to fight. They had wait until the Holy Spirit came from heaven. We don’t have to wait because the Holy Spirit is here ready and waiting for us to ask for Him His power. But the Holy Spirit is firstly also dwelling in us to transform us from the inside out as well as being upon us for service.

How does this work?

  • Our first encounter with the Holy Spirit is when He convicts us of our sin, shows us that none of us can live up to the righteousness of Jesus. As we repent, confess our sins and receive the gift of Salvation the Holy Spirit regenerates our dead inner human spirit which now becomes sensitive to the spiritual things of God (John 3:1-16; Acts 2:38).
  • There is a second work of the Holy Spirit when He baptizes a gift of empowerment, helping the believer to live a holy life is also primarily for the empowerment to witness to others. We are encouraged to ask the Holy Spirit to fill us up on a regular basis. When you feel depleted or need strength, ask Him to replenish.

The impact of being clothed in the power of the Holy Spirit in the progress of God’s work is clearly seen the stories of the people in Acts with God’s presence and power. What do you need the power of the Holy Spirit for? What witness or situations are you facing that you can’t do without being clothed with power from on high?

Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.
