The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!"
It’s all sounds like a really cute story about Jesus taking a pleasant donkey ride into Jerusalem like one you would get on Mablethorpe beach. How wonderful that everyone was so pleased to see Jesus, throwing down their cloaks and laying palm leaves to make a green carpet, the equivalent of us welcoming our celebrities or royalty at a premier of a Hollywood blockbuster by laying out the red carpet. And let’s not forget everyone singing joyfully those famous lines Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Not to mention the comic picture of Jesus saying if the people didn't sing, the stones would sing out for them.
But wait, Hosanna? What does that actually mean? I've always assumed it meant praising God, well some of it does but mostly it means SAVE NOW! If you read the scriptures carefully, they were not just singing, they were crying out JESUS SAVE NOW! How little of the real reason of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem did they know, or that this day and the days to follow were part of God’s unfolding plan to save mankind laid out before the foundation of the world! In Revelation 13 v 8 Jesus is identified as the Lamb who was slain since before the foundation of the world. And here on Palm Sunday Jesus the Lamb of God entered Jerusalem to fulfil all the shadows and prophecies of the Old testament of God’s plan to save us.
The people who shouted Hosanna were really out of touch with Jesus and why he had come. He was going to the cross that would be the only way for anyone from any nation, of any religion, from any background to be SAVED from the consequences of their sin and rebellion against God. To be SAVED to know the power, the presence, the love and the peace of God in their everyday lives through a relationship with Jesus Christ, and to be SAVED to be part of God's great eternal future.
As we delve deeper today into the Old Testament shadows and types. I pray you’ll be awed by the precision of God’s timing; you’ll be overcome by the love of God as your reminded of what Jesus has done for you and be filled with thanksgiving that God through Jesus has saved you. I pray you will be inspired to share this great news that JESUS SAVES, singing in your heart Hosanna, JESUS SAVE NOW for those around us who are our nearest and dearest, those in our town, those in our nation and those around our world. That's why Jesus rode into town that day on a donkey.
1 Peter 1:18-25
Jesus Christ is the beginning, the middle, and the end of all. In the Gospels he walks in human form upon the earth and accomplishes the great work of Gods salvation.
