The 'Season of Creation' is an ecumenical celebration of the gift of creation running from the 1st of September to the 4th of October. This year the theme is ' Jubilee for the Earth' . The web link given below explains more and provides useful resources.

Why Jubilee ?

'And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you: you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family. '(Leviticus 25:10, NRSV)

The COVID -19 pandemic has dominated our thoughts this year but the threat posed by Climate Change has not gone away and still requires swift action. The concept of Jubilee is appropriate , 'a  resetting ' of our relationship with God's Creation. The Guide to the Jubilee describes climate change as  ' a result of the intersection of greed , inequality and destruction of God's Earth ' It goes on to say  ' Jubilee is a time to renounce overconsumption and economic systems based on constant economic growth at the cost of the Earth and those who are poor'

We have seen how a brief pause in activity during the lockdown led to an improvement in air quality ,so if there is a will much can be achieved . Sadly we are not on course to reduce emissions so as to avoid further temperature rises. It is not just a failure to show to God gratitude and responsibility but a willingness to let those least able to adapt suffer the consequences of our actions.

Prayer

Lord may those in positions of power use that power to care for Your World and not let self- interest be their only goal. May we take time to wonder at Your wonderful creation and accept our responsibility as stewards.  Amen
