In 2 Samuel 5, the Philistines come to seek war against Israel so David enquires of the Lord as to what to do. The Lord says to him ‘“Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David does as the Lord commands him, and he strikes down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.’

Prior to this, David had already recently won a battle against the Philistines having followed the Lord’s command, he could have rushed into this one with the same authority but he didn’t.

He recognised that without the Lord’s assured support he would lose.

When he enquires of the Lord again, we see that God is the one who wins the real battle, with his angel army, in the spiritual realms.

Actually, we don’t see it, we hear it, with the sound of their marching in the tops of the poplar trees. It’s an incredible passage.

Like David, we must recognise that any battle we go into must be preceded by the Lord and his heavenly armies. The fight we are taking to the enemy and the ground he has stolen in the younger generations must rely on the Lord’s strength and leading.

David did not assume he would win; he enquired of the Lord and because David honoured the Lord by turning to Him for council and guidance, the Lord went before him.

It’s the same with us.

In prayer we prepare the ground for our awesome God to go ahead of us!

We all agree that we want to see young people in this nation reached with the Good News of Jesus and grow as disciples so let’s get praying!

Prayer

Pray that our young people may see and own the stories in the Bible of the young men and women God used and be able to face their giants in life with confidence in Jesus.
