The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes
The best-selling video game series of all time is the Sims. Players created a virtual person called a Sim and built a life for that electronic person including somewhere to live, making decisions about what their job, education, shopping, relationships - everything that they thought would keep them happy & build a successful life. The aim of the game was to keep your Sim happy and content.
Most of us understand chasing happiness is like chasing the wind and isn’t the best way to build life. We all need something more substantial as life has its ups and downs and we cannot depend on just feelings of happiness.
God has a design for your life, and the bible uses the metaphor of building. Anyone with any knowledge of building knows there are at least two important factors for success what you build upon, and what you build with.
The apostle Paul wrote “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ”. Getting this right is the most important part of building our life upon Jesus Christ, because it’s certain, trustworthy and eternal. Paul tells us that there are also choices in the materials we use “anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be re-vealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work”.
We can build life carefully with things of value, investing in growing deeper in Faith with God, being the best we can be with what we have, giving to & loving others and enriching relationships etc, or we can fill life with things that don’t really add value, really matter & waste time and energy. Paul goes on to say 3 things will remain at the end of our life, Faith, Hope and Love and the greatest of these is Love.
I love the Lyrics from Pat Barratt’s song ‘Build my life’ which are an encouragement to build well on Jesus Christ! “ I will build my life upon your love, it is a firm foundation, and I will put my trust in you alone and I will not be shaken”.
