What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
I wonder if you have what is called a “bucket list”, it’s a list of things you would like to see, do, or achieve before the end of your life. It’s not a bad idea to have such dreams, ambitions, or targets and it can motivate you to get the most out of life. God has creat-ed us that way for adventure and to delight in His creation. I lightly have a mental list of a few things I would like to do, see, achieve. I’d love to do a trek in the Himalayas, to cycle 500 miles around the West Highland way in Scotland, visit the child we sponsor in Uganda and climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. But the top of my list would be to take Jane to go and see the northern lights travelling by train up the coast of Norway to the edge of the artic circle. The problem I have is like all of us is a growing list with an ever-increasing shortage of time to do it all and of course finding the funds to do these things. But I have to ask myself even if I were to do all these would it truly satisfy? Would they really matter?
Our bible reading on Sunday is from Luke 2 v25-35, where Mary and Joseph bring the baby Jesus to the Temple for a ceremony that was the custom and requirement for new born babies at that time. Simeon was a priest and had been promised he would see God’s plan for Salvation. He had been waiting a long time, when in that short meeting with Jesus as a baby the Holy Spirit opened his eyes to see and to know that the time had come in this baby. He said ‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, Luke 2 v 30. Simeon was so satisfied, privileged that in that one brief moment in his life he said he could leave this earth in peace, fully satisfied it was more than enough!
Is Jesus more than enough for you? Is your experience of knowing Jesus Christ as your Lord, Saviour and friend enough that even if you lost everything else and never did anything else on your bucket list, would He be more than enough?
