Turning the World upside down

Tuesday 31 March 2020

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2 v 9

If I was to say the name Greta Thunberg do you know what she is well known for?
If you don’t know, she is the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist and recently named as youngest person to ever be honoured by Time Magazine, she has spoken to governments, and at the UN. She has become an inspiration to millions of others, particularly young people and has become a flagship of the movement to press governments across the world to take action against climate change. What are we known for as followers of Jesus?
Our bible study this morning continues in Acts 17, a mob gathered against the believers in Thessalonica and accused them of being, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.” What an amazing compliment!
Jesus said, we should let our light shine before others, that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven. Matthew 5 v 15.

We are to be people who turn the world upside down, not through any desire to make ourselves famous, but to point to Jesus, honour Him and make Him even more famous. The world has already been upside down since the fall of mankind at the beginning, Jesus came into this world to turn things the right way up, as the whole life and death of Jesus and his teaching show us.

What an incredible challenge to us today.
What are we known for? Both personally, together as a church at MBC and collectively as Christians in 21st century Britain? I am personally challenged by this as I try to prayer walk around various parts of our town each week, I’m always overwhelmed at how the world just passes us by and in general is blissfully unaware of the church, what it’s about, what it stands for. We are undoubtedly one of Mansfield’s best kept secrets to the majority of people who live and work in our town.

Let’s continue to pray, and to serve and find ways to be known as those people who turn the world upside down or right way up.

 Acts 17 v 1-15

the men who followed Jesus were unique in their generation. They turned the world upside down because their hearts had been turned right side up. The world has never been the same.
