This is a special season in the Christian year as we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. At first the disciples were aghast at the thought of Jesus leaving them. How would they cope? But they eventually came to realise that this was necessary. You could say it was a release from lockdown. For Jesus it enabled him to be present with every believer in every time and place; and for every believer it opened up a whole new dimension of Christian living and service through the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). We therefore can have confidence because he prays for us. (Hebrew 7:25) We therefore can have courage as we are commissioned to continue his work. As the message from a recent Deacons’ meeting reminds us: “Loving God may we be vehicles of your love and compassion and never hesitate to challenge injustice at home and abroad.”
With love and prayer. Derek.
“If we look for signs in the heavens, we may easily miss God’s footprints in the High Street.”
